What a contractor website costs in California, and what it has to include

A builder plan, a freelancer's hours, an agency's project, or a fixed build. What each one publishes, and the parts of a California contractor's site that none of the prices mention.

The short answer

In 2026 a California contractor can build a site on Wix for $17 to $159 a month or on Squarespace for $19 to $99 a month billed yearly, or hire an Upwork designer at a median $15 to $30 an hour (read on 26 October 2026). Orium Studios in Sacramento builds one from $1,200 for a one-page landing and from $2,500 for a site with a page per service and city, with your CSLB licence number on every page.

SHT-02What drives the number

01

What a builder plan covers, and what it leaves to you

Wix publishes plans from $17 a month to $159 a month, with $39 a month for the plan it recommends, all billed for a year up front. Squarespace runs $19 to $99 a month billed yearly, or $25 to $139 paid month to month. That buys hosting, templates and an editor. The words, the licence number, a page for each service and each city you work in, and where a submitted form goes are yours to get right, in your evenings.

02

What a freelancer's hour buys

Upwork publishes median rates of $15 to $30 an hour for web designers on its platform, and $45 to $75 and up for a full custom site design. Those are worldwide figures, not California ones, and Upwork says so. Its own guidance on hours is "You should expect anywhere from 10 hours for a very small design project to several dozen hours for a large-scale, custom design". A freelancer can be excellent. Ask who writes the copy, who answers when something breaks in six months, and in whose name the hosting and the domain are registered.

03

Agencies quote per project

An agency quotes after a discovery call, and its price covers a team: a strategist, a designer, a developer and an account manager. That is right when several people have to sign off. No agency publishes a California figure this page could check, so none is printed here, and a range you read elsewhere without a source deserves the same suspicion.

04

What a California contractor's site has to carry

The Contractors State License Board requires a contractor's licence number in its advertising, and a website is advertising. On a site built here the number is one field, and the footer, every service page and the structured data search engines read all take it from there, so it cannot be missing from the page a customer happens to land on. A template does not do this on its own, and a designer from another state may not know to. The studio does not give legal advice: confirm with your lawyer what your licence requires, and the site carries it.

05

A page for each service and each city

A customer searches for the job in the place: "deck repair Roseville", "kitchen remodel San Jose". A one-page site answers one of those questions; a page per service and per city answers each of them on its own. That is the difference between the two lines of the Website Build: Landing page from $1,200 · site with a page per service and city from $2,500. Start with the one your calls justify.

06

Where the lead goes after the form

A form that emails an inbox costs the same to build as one that writes a record into a CRM and tells a person right away, and only the second one pays for itself. Designing the route on the first day costs little even when there is nothing on the other end yet, and saves rebuilding the site the day a CRM arrives. If the system is what you need, a Fitted System starts at $2,500 and a custom CRM at $4,500.

07

The yearly line items

Hosting, the domain, a builder plan and a form or booking plugin each look small and each renews. Ask for the full yearly list before you compare quotes, and whether the site moves with you if you stop paying any one of them. On a build here you own the repository, the hosting account and the domain; upkeep after launch is the optional Maintain retainer at $300 a month.

How much does a custom CRM actually cost?

The commonly quoted range describes a different kind of company building a different kind of system. Here is the arithmetic underneath it.

What would a custom CRM cost for your scope?

The pricing page publishes a floor and four named pieces. This adds them up for the scope you pick, and refuses to invent the two numbers it cannot know.

Automation agency subscription vs a system you own

Most automation agencies in South Florida sell the same shape: a setup fee, then a monthly plan for automation they operate. This page does the arithmetic on one of them, at its own published prices, and says when that shape is the right buy.

What does an AI agent cost, and what should it be allowed to do?

Two separate numbers: what it costs to build, and what it costs to keep answering. Most quotes only mention the first.

Freelancer, agency, DIY builder and a fixed-price build, side by side, with what each one leaves out.

What a website costs in Sacramento, and what the quote leaves out

A price on its own says little. What decides whether a site pays for itself here is where the lead goes after the form, and what California asks the site to say.

Web design for Sacramento contractors: the licence on every page, the lead in a CRM

In California a contractor's website is advertising, and the state says what advertising must carry. The rest of the job is getting the lead off the page and into a record before the evening is over.

Web design for Bay Area contractors: a page for each city, the licence on every page

A customer in San Francisco reads three results on a phone and calls one. The site has to be the one that says what you do, where, and under which licence, before the other two do.

Is an AI agent actually cheaper than hiring somebody?

The wage is the smallest part of one number and the build is half of the other. Both sides of the comparison are published here, with their sources.

What an AI receptionist costs a California contractor in 2026

Two bills, not one: what it costs to set up and what it costs every month to keep answering. What the vendors publish, read from their own pricing pages, and what changes because the phone rings in California.

SHT-06General notes

The questions people actually ask.

N01How much does a contractor website cost in California?
On a builder, $17 to $159 a month at Wix or $19 to $99 at Squarespace billed yearly; a freelancer on Upwork at a median $15 to $30 an hour (read on 26 October 2026). At Orium Studios a Website Build runs from $1,200 for a one-page landing and from $2,500 for a site with a page per service and city, live in 10-14 days.
N02Does my CSLB licence number have to be on my website?
California requires a contractor's licence number in its advertising, and a website is advertising, so a site built here prints it on every page from one field. The studio does not give legal advice: confirm what your licence requires with your lawyer.
N03Is Wix or Squarespace enough for a contractor?
For a new business with no ad spend, often yes. It stops being enough when you pay for traffic: the plan does not write your pages, add a page for each city, or send a lead anywhere but an inbox.
N04What does a contractor website cost every year after launch?
The renewals: hosting, the domain and any builder plan or plugin, each billed in your name. Upkeep from the studio is optional, the Maintain retainer at $300 a month. The site keeps running without it.
N05Is a website in California more expensive than in Florida?
Not from this studio: the ladder is published and the same in every state. What changes is the content, the licence number and the cities you serve. The Florida guide covers that market on its own terms.

SHT-07Evidence

The work this argument comes from.

Everything above was learned building these. Each sheet names the business, what the trade's arithmetic actually is, and the file in the repository that proves the capability. No client revenue and no client's customers appear on any of them.

SHT-09What it costs

What a system like this costs.

A custom CRM built around how your business actually works starts at $4,500. One of the systems that already runs, fitted to your process, starts at $2,500. Both are floors, and the build is priced by the work.
